The Kintetsu 80000 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since March 2020.
History[]
The 80000 series sets were designed as a successor to the 21000 and 21020 series trains, as well as designing a limited express train for the future. These were intended for use between Nagoya and Osaka. Eleven sets were produced from 2019 to 2021, all by Kinki Sharyo. The sets entered service on 14 March 2020 on Hinotori (lit. "firebird") services. The 80000 series sets were the recipient of the 2021 Blue Ribbon Award as well as a recipient of the 2020 Good Design Award.
Design[]
The 80000 series sets use a unique design with a metallic red body with Premium Gold highlights and a futuristic streamlined design, making heavy use of curved surfaces to evoke a sense of speed. The train's logo mark resembles a phoenix. The design of the trains was overseen by the GK Design Group.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The trains use 2-level Mitsubishi hybrid SiC-IGBT variable frequency drives which produce a high-pitched hissing sound. One set uses Hitachi SiC-IGBT variable frequency drives instead.
