The Kintetsu 7000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway on the Kintetsu Keihanna Line and the Osaka Metro Chūō Line from October 1986.

History[]

The 7000 series sets were introduced from October 1986 to coincide with the opening of the Kintetsu Keihanna Line, as well as allowing through-running to the Osaka Municipal Subway (now Osaka Metro) Chūō Line. A prototype set was built in July 1984 and test run until 1986 on a short section of the then-to-be-completed Keihanna Line. In total nine sets were built, totaling 54 cars. The sets underwent refurbishment from 2004 to 2006 with the introduction of the 7020 series cars. The sets were the recipient of the 1987 Good Design Award, being the first rolling stock to receive this award.

Design[]

The 7000 series sets feature a conventional front end with two side-mounted headlights. The sets are painted in Pearl White with Solar Orange and Aqua Blue highlights; this is a very different livery from most of Kintetsu's other rolling stock.

Specifications[]

Construction is of steel. The sets use GTO variable frequency drive traction systems manufactured by Hitachi or Mitsubishi on odd and even-numbered sets respectively. Some sets have been refurbished with IGBT drives, using either 3-level Hitachi IGBT or Mitsubishi IGBT drives.

Trivia[]

  • These are the first rolling stock on any Japanese private railroad to utilize third rail collector shoes.
  • The sets were branded Super Electronic Commuter; this branding is currently very rarely (if ever) used.
