The Kintetsu 50000 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since March 2013.

History[]

The 50000 series sets were designed to help revitalize travel to the Ise-Shima region. Design studies had been conducted since 2009 to determine the appearance and color scheme of the trains; the survey results showed that commuters preferred a spacious train with many amenities, Premium seats for comfort and numerous lounges to respond to various types of travel styles. As such the train was designed with these issues in mind.

Three sets were produced from 2012 to 2014, all by Kinki Sharyo. The sets entered service on 21 March 2013 on Shimakaze (lit. "island wind") services. Unlike other Kintetsu limited express trains the 50000 series sets are only used on these Shimakaze services and are not used on any other limited express services due to their lack of non-reserved seats; it is one of the few Japanese trains used for regular service with a dining car. The 50000 series sets were the recipient of the 2014 Blue Ribbon Award.

Design[]

The 50000 series sets use a unique design with a Crystal White body with Fine Blue accents and gold highlights and a futuristic streamlined design, making heavy use of curved surfaces. The livery is reminiscent of the coasts around the Ise-Shima region, with the train's name chosen to pay homage to the Shima region. The train's logo mark makes use of a wave-like design. The design of the trains was overseen by Rikuhei Yamauchi and Shōji Inoue.

Specifications[]

Construction is of steel. The trains use 2-level Mitsubishi IGBT variable frequency drives which produce a futuristic sound.

The set features three different styles of cars; high-decker, double deck and standard height.
