The Kintetsu 23000 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since March 1994.

History[]

The 23000 series sets were designed as a modern train that could operate in the Ise-Shima region. Six sets were produced between 1993 and 1995, all by Kinki Sharyo; the sets entered service in the region to coincide with the opening of the Plaza EspaƱa (Shima Spain Village) in Shima. These sets were designated the Ise-Shima Liner. The sets are a recipient of the 1994 Brunel Award.

Design[]

The 23000 series sets use a unique design with a curved design with top-mounted headlight clusters. The sets were designed as a new type of vehicle which retains Kintetsu's appearance and characteristics while being a special train which can ferry passengers with a resort feel. The Renfe Class 100 trains were used as a design reference. The design of the trains was overseen jointly by the Kintetsu and Kinki Sharyo Design Departments, Masamichi Tesen and Rikuhei Yamauchi. Odd-numbered sets are painted Sunshine Red with Aqua Blue accents while even-numbered sets are painted Sunshine Yellow with Cosmetic Orange accents; prior to their refurbishment all sets were painted Sunshine Yellow with Grayish Sand accents and Aqua Blue highlights.

Specifications[]

Construction is of steel. The trains use Mitsubishi GTO traction systems which produce a wail which steps up in pitch; set iL03 uses a Mitsubishi SiC traction system which produces a quiet hiss.
