The Kintetsu 22000 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since March 1992.
History[]
The 22000 series sets were designed to replace the older 10400 and 11400 series cars. Twenty-eight sets were produced between 1992 and 1996, all by Kinki Sharyo; the sets entered service in March 1992 on the Nagoya-Osaka service. These sets were given the branding of ACE; this branding would be used on a number of other related trains. The sets are a recipient of the 1992 Good Design Award. From 2015 to 2020 all sets underwent refurbishment.
Design[]
The 22000 series sets use a flat design with top-mounted headlight clusters. The sets feature gangwayed cab ends, allowing the sets to couple with other limited express sets. The design of the sets was overseen by Masamichi Tesen and Rikuhei Yamauchi.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The trains use Mitsubishi GTO traction systems which produce a wailing sound or a wailing sound which steps up in pitch. The sets were the first Kintetsu limited express trains to use variable frequency drives.

Trivia[]
- Officially, the sets are named ACE (with the letters pronounced individually). With the introduction of the 22600 series, also named Ace (pronounced like the word), the 22000 series sets were named "ACE" to differentiate between both types. Despite this many people (including internal Kintetsu management) refer to the train as "Ace".
