The Kintetsu 21000 series is a Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since March 1988.
History[]
The 21000 series sets were designed as a train for use on the Nagoya-Osaka route of the Kintetsu Railway. 66 cars were produced from 1988 to 1990, with the sets entering service on 18 March 1988; three additional two-car sets were also manufactured to act as intermediate cars. The sets were initially given the branding of Urban Liner, but after refurbishment the sets were rebranded to Urban Liner plus.
The sets were the recipients of the 1988 Good Design Award, the 1988 Nikkei Excellent Product and Service Award and the 1989 Blue Ribbon Award.
Design[]
The 21000 series sets use a unique design with a white body with Fresh Orange accents on an "egg-shaped" body; the sets's design takes inspiration from the DB Class 403 used on the Lufthansa Airport Express. The design of the trains was overseen by Rikuhei Yamauchi, this being the first of his designs.
The sets were refurbished from 2003, with added barrier-free access mechanisms, addition of a smoking room, the removal of the in-car sale preparation rooms and the replacement of the reclining seats. Refurbishment was complete by 2005.

Construction is of steel. The trains use resistor-controlled traction systems.
The 21000 series cars were the first Kintetsu limited express trains to feature an electronic horn; when played the horn plays two three note chords to produce a vague honking noise.
