The Kintetsu 20100 series was a Japanese charter-only electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway from 1962 to December 1993.

History[]

The 20100 series sets were designed as a train for use on charter services. With the use of the 10100 series sets, double deck trains were also gaining in popularity, as their structure allowed for more passengers to be carried on shorter trains; additionally, the 20100 series were designed to take advantage of the children around the Ise-Shima region, with their double-deck design allowing children the experience to ride a double-deck train and excite them. A total of five sets were produced, all in 1962 by Kinki Sharyo. The sets were named Aozora (lit. "blue sky") through a poll conducted for students at the Tamagawa Elementary School.

On their introduction in 1962, three trains were deployed to Osaka and the other two to Nagoya. These were mainly used on charter-only services but quickly became obsolete due to their lack of air-conditioning; the sets remained in regular use until October 1989, when the sets were replaced with a dedicated set known as the Aozora II. 20101 would be last used in December 1993 to pull a special train before it was scrapped in January 1994. No 20100 series cars have been preserved.

Design[]

The 20100 series set used a flat design with top-mounted headlights.

Specifications[]
