The Kintetsu 20000 series is a Japanese charter-only double deck electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway since November 1990.
History[]
The 20000 series set was designed as a replacement for the 20100 series Aozora sets, which were aging and largely obsolete. One set was constructed in 1990 by Kinki Sharyo; it underwent various test runs and entered service on 23 November 1990. The set was named Raku (lit. "comfort"). The set is only used for charter services and is not used in regular service.
The set underwent heavy refurbishment in 2020, gaining a new livery, high-intensity discharge headlights and other internal changes; normally, Kintetsu sets would be refurbished after 20 years in service, but since mileage of the set was rather low and it was rarely used compared to other sets refurbishment was conducted much later.
Design[]
The 20000 series set uses a flat design with top-mounted headlights. Marker lamps are located on the sides of the cab cars.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The train uses resistor-controlled traction systems.
Trivia[]
- "Raku" is a backronym for "Romantic Journey, Artistic Sophistication, Kind Hospitality, Unbelievable!".
