The Kintetsu 10100 series was a Japanese articulated limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway from December 1958 to August 1979.

History[]

The 10100 series was designed as a refined version of the 10000 series train, from which data was obtained for development of future trains. Two sets were initially built and placed on the Nagoya-Osaka limited express route on 12 December 1959; more sets would be built over the coming years, totaling 54 cars in three distinct batches. The 10100 series cars were intended to originally be introduced in February 1960 when gauge change on the Nagoya Line was complete, but then-president Isamu Saeki made a decision to push its introduction ahead to December 1959 to take advantage of the damage caused to lines in Nagoya by Typhoon Vera.

When the set was introduced competition was initially fierce between Kintetsu and the Japanese National Railways; with the introduction of the Shinkansen in 1964 however Kintetsu began to lag behind. Kintetsu management then made the decision to redeploy these sets on other lines. These would continue to be used on other lines until newer trains such as the 12400 series were introduced, obsoleting the 10100 series cars. Retirements of the sets began in 1979 with special events held between July and August 1979 to commemorate their retirement. No 10100 series cars survive, although equipment from the sets was used in the refurbishment and construction of other trains.

Design[]

The 10100 series set used a curved design with top-mounted headlights. Each set features at least one gangwayed car end; two gangwayed cab ends are featured on third-batch sets.

Specifications[]

Construction was of steel. The train used resistor-controlled traction systems.
