The Kintetsu 10000 series was a prototype Japanese limited express electric multiple unit operated by the Kintetsu Railway from July 1958 to May 1971.

History[]

The 10000 series was designed as a futuristic train which could compete with the Japanese National Railways in the 1950s with their high speed limited express trains. The brainchild of the train was Isamu Saeki, then-president of the Kintetsu Railway; he commissioned the design of a train which could surpass JNR's trains in just about every way. The sole set was constructed by Kinki Sharyo in June 1958; it was test run on 17 June 1958 and entered service on 11 July 1958. The set was most notably the first train in Japan to utilize double deck cars; these were nicknamed Vista Cars and were the first of a long line of double-deck cars on the Kintetsu Railway.

Data used from the development of these sets would be implemented in the 10100 series cars in 1959. The set was involved in a crash in 1966 but was quickly repaired. Despite its futuristic appearance the set became obsolete fast, most notably lacking air conditioning compared to later sets; Kintetsu management then made the decision to replace the 10000 series set with a 12200 series set. Minor refurbishment works were carried out in 1970, with the set making its final run on 9 May 1971 before being scrapped.

The 10000 series set used a curved design with top-mounted headlights. One end of the train featured a gangwayed cab.
