The KiHa 75 series is a Japanese diesel multiple unit operated by the Central Japan Railway Company since August 1993.
History[]
The sets were introduced on 1 August 1993 on Mie Rapid services to replace the old and aging KiHa 58 and 65 series cars. More sets were built over the next few years until 1999 and put into service progressively.
Twenty two-car sets were produced for a total of forty cars; they are based at Nagoya Depot.
Design[]
The KiHa 75 series sports a rather modern look for DMUs of the time; this design language was not exactly carried over to newer DMUs ordered by JR Central.
Specifications[]
The sets are all built by Nippon Sharyo and use unpainted stainless steel bodies. Cars are 21.3 meters long, 2.943 meters wide and 3.63 meters high. The sets use two C-DMF14HZB prime movers per car; the C-DMF14HZB prime movers are in fact normal DMF14HZB prime movers manufactured under license by Cummins.
There are many variants of the KiHa 75 series sets, each fulfilling a different role. The KiHa 75, 75-100, 75-200, 75-300, 75-400 and 75-500 series are standard variants, with minor cosmetic differences between the sets, while the KiHa 75-1200, 75-1300, 75-3200, 75-3300, 75-3400 and 75-3500 series sets can be used during extreme weather conditions and feature additional snow-proofing measures. The KiHa 75-3200 and 75-3300 series sets are also specifically designed to allow wanman driver-only usage.
The cars are generally coupled into two-car sets but can run individually from each other.
