The Batten NAGASAKI was a very short-lived charter-only service run by a converted KiHa 28 series diesel multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways from May 1985 to December 1986.
History[]
The Batten NAGASAKI was an early Joyful Train consisting of two converted JNR KiHa 58 series cars; specifically KiHa 28 2006 and KiHa 28 2114. After conversion the cars did not receive any changes to their numbering. The set entered service on 26 May 1985, with the two cars separated by a KiHa 58 series car in between powering them. The set was used for special guest services until it was retired on 1 December 1986 and scrapped. The set was based at Nagasaki Depot and was scrapped prior to JNR's privatization and subsequent division.
Design[]
The Batten NAGASAKI featured the same general design as the KiHa 58 series cars they were converted from. Unlike practically all other Joyful Trains, the cars featured no livery changes from their original, featuring their standard livery of a Cream No.4 "wheat" base coat with Red No. 4 "Scarlet" accents, with all major changes being made to the interior of the cars.
Construction is of steel. Performance statistics are largely identical to that of the KiHa 28 series cars these were converted from; this article will still detail some additional statistics about the cars.
The cars were fitted with a Batten NAGASAKI headmark on their fronts. The interior of the cars featured carpeting, a mahjong table and a karaoke set. Shōji screens were also attached to the windows.
