The KiHa 25 series is a low-capacity commuter diesel multiple unit operated by the Central Japan Railway Company since March 2011.
History[]
The KiHa 25 series cars were introduced in 2011 to replace the older KiHa 11 series cars for use on non-electrified lines. These entered service on the Taketoyo Line on 1 March 2011, a few days ahead of the introduction of that year's revised timetable. From 2010 to 2016, a total of 62 cars were produced, all by Nippon Sharyo. The trains are currently mainly used on the Taketoyo Line and some metropolitan services, but with JR Central planning to electrify the Taketoyo Line in the future, the KiHa 11 series are expected to be moved to other lines; as such, preparatory work is being undertaken to allow them to be compatible and optimized for local lines.
Design[]
The KiHa 25 series feature a modern design with dual high-intensity discharge headlights mounted under the windows. The design of the cars is largely based on the design of the 313 series city commuter cars, but feature some minor differences when compared to them, such as the lack of top-mounted headlights and a slightly different front pilot.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel based on the 313 series cars, but feature a matte design as opposed to shiny due to laser welding being used. Cars are 20.1 meters long, slightly shorter than the standard length of car for the JNR (21.3 m). The cars feature bench seating and a slightly different window configuration from the 313 series.
The KiHa 25 series cars are equipped with a C-DMF14HZD prime mover (Cummins prime mover produced under license) producing 444 HP (450 PS). Power is transmitted through a 4-speed hydraulic transmission. The cars are also equipped with the BVD (Body Vibration Detector) system, which will alert the drivers if any bogies are vibrating.
