The KiHa 201 series is a tilting Japanese suburban diesel multiple unit operated by the Hokkaido Railway Company since March 1997.
History[]
The KiHa 201 series sets were designed in 1996 to help reduce congestion at stations in the most urbanized parts of Hokkaido, in addition to speeding up train services on non-electrified suburban lines.
Four sets were built by Fuji Heavy Industries (now known as Subaru Corporation) from 1996 to 1997, and all entered service on 22 March 1997 with the introduction of the revised timetable. They are based at Naebo Depot.
The KiHa 201 series sets are notable for their ability to operate in multiple with the 731 series electric multiple units. This remains the only example of electric multiple units and diesel multiple units currently in service operating in multiple with each other in Japan.
Design[]
The KiHa 201 series sets adopted a new body style started by the 731 series sets that forms the basic design language for later suburban-style trains that were to be built for JR Hokkaido. The sets have two pairs of headlights; a pair of top-mounted headlights and a pair of body-mounted headlights. The sets' body-mounted headlights use a combination of high-intensity discharge and shield-beam headlights, while the top-mounted headlights are simply shield-beam headlights. The KiHa 261 series sets introduced a year later are directly based on the KiHa 201 series sets.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. The KiHa 201-100 series' cars are 21.67 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 3.62 meters high, while the KiHa 201-200 series' cars are 21.3 meters long, 2.8 meters wide and 4.012 meters high. The cars all use two N-DMF13HZE prime movers which produce 450 PS (443 hp, 331 kW) each. The sets have a pneumatic tilting system which allows them to tilt up to two degrees around curves.
