The KiHa 185 series is a Japanese limited express diesel multiple unit operated by the Japanese National Railways and its successor companies the Kyushu and Shikoku Railway Company since November 1986.
History[]
The KiHa 185 series sets were built in 1986 ahead of the privatization of the JNR, in addition to being a low-cost diesel railcar compared to other diesel railcars used by the JNR. The KiHa 185 series was also meant to stabilize the monetary management of the JNR before JR Shikoku came into existence in April 1987.
Fifty-two cars were built by Fuji Heavy Industries (now known as Subaru Corporation), Niigata Tekkō (now known as Niigata Transys) and Nippon Sharyo. When the JNR was privatized, the KiHa 185 series cars were taken under JR Shikoku and JR Hokkaido ownership. All cars are currently in service; JR Shikoku operates 32 cars while JR Kyushu operates the remaining 20.
Due to its outstanding functional and design features, it is one of three recipients of the 1986 Laurel Prize; the other two being the Kitakyu 8000 series and the Kintetsu 7000 series.
Design[]
The KiHa 185 series cars uses a different body design when compared to other diesel multiple units of the era; the design of the set is reminiscent of the N183 and NN183 series cars introduced around a similar period.
Specifications[]
Construction is of stainless steel. Cars are 21.3 meters long, 2.903 meters wide and 3.845 meters high. The cars use two DMF13HS prime movers that produce 250 PS (247 HP, 184 kW) each.
