The KiHa 125 series, branded the Yellow One Man Diesel Car (Y-DC125), is a low-capacity commuter diesel multiple unit operated by the Kyushu Railway Company since 1993.
History[]
The KiHa 125 series cars were introduced in 1993 to replace the older KiHa 45 and KiHa 52 series cars used on non-electrified lines as well as allowing for wanman operation. The cars were placed in the Karatsu and Ōita Depots and entered service in 1993. All cars have remained in service since, replacing older diesel railcars in their intended role. A number of other dieselcars share the same dimensions and basic specifications as the KiHa 125 series cars.
Design[]
The KiHa 125 series feature a squarish design with dual rectangular headlights mounted under the windows. The cars are painted yellow with the Yellow One Man Diesel Car and Y-DC125 branding all around. The livery of the cars was designed by Eiji Mitooka, the managing director of Don Design Associates.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel based on the NDC series of diesel cars. The cars feature one of the NDC series's standard car lengths of 18.5 meters. A number of NDC cars operated by private third-sector railroads feature specifications identical to that of the KiHa 125 series.
The KiHa 125 series cars are equipped with a DMF13HZ prime mover producing 325 HP (330 PS); this is a standard engine for the NDC series cars. Power is transmitted through a 2-speed hydraulic transmission.
