The Keio 5000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Keio Corporation since September 2017.
History[]
The 5000 series sets were introduced as a new and modern train for the Keio network to meet the seating needs of passengers, mainly for Keio's first reserved-seat service, named Keio Liner. The sets entered service on 29 September 2017 on regular services, with five sets built initially; one more set was built in 2019. The sets are a recipient of the 2017 Good Design Award.
Design[]
The 5000 series cars feature a streamlined front with slanted headlight casings; the sets also feature unpainted stainless steel bodies, but do not feature the typical "lines" typical of stainless steel cars. The Keio corporate livery of pink and navy blue is seen on the sets. The sets feature daytime running lights.
Specifications[]
Construction of the cars is of a double-skinned aluminum alloy based on J-TREC's Sustina concept. The sets were originally equipped with Hitachi hybrid SiC variable frequency drive traction systems which produce a hissing noise.
The sets feature a musical horn, the first of its kind on the Keio Corporation. The musical horns play a seven-note synthesized ditty; 5781 initially had a significantly grander sounding horn playing the same ditty before it was replaced with the same horn on all other sets some time in 2018.
