The Keikyu 2100 series, is a Japanese city express commuter electric multiple unit operated by Keikyu Corporation since March 1998.

History[]

The 2100 series trains were designed as a successor to the older 2000 trains, with emphasis placed on comfort, ease of maintenance, cost reduction and improved performance. To commemorate Keikyu's 100th anniversary, the sets were given the 2100 series moniker to reference the upcoming 21st century. Operations began on 28 March 1998. Refurbishment began in 2013 to extend the sets' lifespans and was completed in 2020. The sets are mainly used on the paid Morning Wing and Evening Wing services on the Keikyu network and thus could sort of be considered limited express trains.

Design[]

The 2100 series sets use a flat front end with top-mounted headlights in square-shaped casings recessed in the body. Two ovoid casings mounted near the bottom of the car body house the taillights and express indicators.

Specifications[]

Construction is of an aluminum alloy. The sets were manufactured with Siemens SIBAS32 GTO variable frequency drives, producing a solfège scale on acceleration, giving them the affectionate moniker of "singing train" and the traction motors the "do-re-mi-fa inverter". Due to a lack of spare parts and Siemens having withdrawn from the Japanese market, a decision was made by Keikyu to replace the traction systems; this work was completed in March 2015 when the last set to feature this traction system, 2133, was refurbished. No more "singing trains" exist on the Keikyu Corporation either, as the last set as a whole to feature this traction system, N1000 series set 1033, was refurbished in July 2021. The sets now feature Tōyō Denki Seizō IGBT inverters instead.
