The Keihan 2600 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Keihan Electric Railway since 1978.
History[]
In 1959, the Keihan 2000 series, nicknamed the "Super Car", noted for their high acceleration and deceleration speeds compared to other trains of the time, was introduced. However, come the 1970s, Keihan's management decided to boost the voltage of the overhead lines from 600 V to 1,500 V, with the 2000 series sets being unable to handle the voltage spikes, and a train that could handle these spikes was required urgently. As a result, Keihan's management decided that the best way to create a train which could handle these spikes in short notice was to convert the old 2000 series cars into new trains.
Over a period of five years from 1978 through September 1982, a total of twenty-nine sets (formed into ten 3-car, fourteen 4-car, two 2-car and 3 3-car sets) were converted at Keihan's Neyagawa Works, all from 2000 series cars. An additional four new-build sets, all 7-cars long, produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries were introduced in 1983. These were designated as the "-30" series sets. Due to the age of the cars, scrapping of the sets began in 2001. All Neyagawa-built sets were withdrawn by 2024.
Design[]
The 2600 series use a conventional squared-off design with dual top-mounted headlights as is typical of many Keihan electric multiple units. These feature a simple design. The -30 series seats feature smaller sealed-beam headlights and rectangular train service lights. These headlights were later converted into LED fixtures.
