The Keihan 2200 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Keihan Electric Railway since 1964.

History[]

In 1959, the Keihan 2000 series, nicknamed the "Super Car", noted for their high acceleration and deceleration speeds compared to other trains of the time, was introduced. These cars were fast, but only featured two doors per side so platform congestion was a noted problem; in fact, many of Keihan's trains at the time still featured two doors per side. Keihan had attempted to combat this in the past by refitting existing 2-door cars to have three doors, although this method was becoming ineffective due to the rapid increase in commuter density. As such, it was decided that the best way to solve this issue was to build a new three-door train from the get-go.

A total of 103 cars formed into some twenty-six sets were produced from 1964 to 1968. The trains entered service in 1964 and became a mainstay of the line. The trains were mostly standardized into 7-car sets from 1971. Equipment was then added to the trains to allow them to cope with the impending voltage boost from 1974 to 1976; air conditioning was also added around the same time. In 1985, five intermediate cars were manufactured for the first time in 17 years; this was to convert the sets into 8-car sets for rush hour operation. Despite the fact that the 6000 series were the newest trains at the time and would have been perfect candidates for this conversion, Keihan did not want to risk the downtime and lower the frequency of trains plying Kyoto, which did not allow for the use of 8-car trains; additionally, the 6000 series sets were still being built at the time.

Due to their age, the sets were scrapped starting from 2007. As of 2021, only seven sets remain in service, all formed into 7-car sets: these are 2209, 2210, 2211, 2216, 2217, 2225 and 2226. These are also the oldest operating trainsets on the Keihan Main Line as of 2021.

Design[]

The 2200 series use a conventional squared-off design with dual top-mounted headlights as is typical of many Keihan electric multiple units. These feature a simple design. These headlights were later converted into LED fixtures. The sets feature two different forms of express daytime running lights.

Specifications[]

Construction of the cars is of steel. Cars are 18.7 meters long. The sets used resistor control at first, but have since been converted to use field excitation resistance control.
