The Keihan 13000 series is a Japanese city commuter electric multiple unit operated by the Keihan Electric Railway since April 2012.
History[]
The 13000 series sets were manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries starting in 2012 to replace older trains, such as the 2200, 2400 and 2600 series, which were noted to have become quite aged around this time, in addition to complementing the 10000 series cars. A total of eighteen sets in five batches have been manufactured as of March 2021, formed into eight 4-car, six 6-car, six 7-car and one 8-car set for a total of 113 cars.
The trains were painted in the current Keihan corporate livery of Rest Green (dark green) with Fresh Green (chartreuse) accents from new and were the first trains to be painted in Keihan's new corporate livery from the factory. The trains are mostly used on the Uji and Kono branches on the Keihan Main Line and do not usually operate on limited express services unless a need arises. With the introduction of the fifth batch sets in 2021, the 13000 series cars will have the largest fleet size of any train in the Keihan roster.
Design[]
The 13000 series use a conventional squared-off design with dual top-mounted headlights as is typical of many Keihan electric multiple units. These feature an elaborate design with downward curving express daytime running lamps. The headlights have since been changed to LED fixtures. As the sets are generally based on the 3000 series sets introduced in 2008, the visual designs of the sets remains largely identical apart from the dual headlights as opposed to three.
Specifications[]
Construction of the cars is of aluminum alloy. Cars are 18.9 meters long. All sets use Tōyō Denki Seizō insulated gate bipolar transistor variable frequency drive which produce a high-pitched whine. As the 13000 series cars are based on the 3000 series cars, the underbody equipment of both cars is largely identical.
Trivia[]
- This 13000 series sets appeared in a few Sound Euphonium episodes.
