Kōriyama Works

Kōriyama Works (Japanese: 郡山工場 Kōriyama Kōjō) is a rolling stock maintenance facility under the jurisdiction of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). It is currently part of the Kōriyama General Rolling Stock Center (Japanese: 郡山総合車両センター Kōriyama Sōgō Sharyō Sentā), having been part of it since 2004.

History[]

Kōriyama Works was opened in December 1920 by the Japanese Government Railways (JGR), taking over steam locomotive maintenance functions from Morioka Works; the locomotive depot housing Kōriyama Works, the Kōriyama Locomotive Depot, was completed on 15 December 1887. Kōriyama Works completed its first steam locomotive, D51 234, on 6 December 1938; a total of 15 steam locomotives were manufactured by Kōriyama (10 D51s and 5 B20s), with the last steam locomotive being manufactured by Kōriyama being B20 5 in May 1945.

Ownership of Kōriyama came under the Japanese National Railways (JNR) following JGR's reorganization post-war. Kōriyama Works took over steam locomotive maintenance operations from Ōmiya Works in October 1950 and Tsuchizaki Works in May 1972. The last steam locomotive to be repaired at Kōriyama was C11 63 on 20 July 1974. Following the privatization of the JNR, Kōriyama Works came under the ownership of the JR East.

Kōriyama Works was integrated into the Kōriyama General Rolling Stock Center on 1 April 2004 and ceased to exist. Kōriyama General Rolling Stock Center today houses only diesel-powered locomotives and multiple units.
