The JR Shikoku 9000 series is a non-revenue diesel multiple unit operated by the Shikoku Railway Company since March 2025 for transporting long and heavy objects by rail.
History[]
The 9000 series was developed as a purpose-built self-propelled locomotive which could be used to transport large objects such as rails and pipes with power distributed throughout the entire set. JR Shikoku had wanted to replace their aging freight transportation locomotives for some time and as a result decided to introduce vehicles of the same type as JR Central's KiYa 97 series locomotives.
The first recorded use of these sets was on 18 March 2025.
Design[]

The KiYa E195 series use a unique design featuring a raised driver's cab and long beds for transporting items.
A major difference compared to the KiYa 97 series sets is that the 9000 series sets use LED headlights.
Specifications[]
Construction is of steel. The 9000 series cars are heavily based on JR Central's KiHa 75 series sets in terms of underfloor equipment. The Cummins prime movers used by the sets are mated to a Niigata Converter DW19R hydraulic transmission, upgraded from previous transmissions to allow for better slow speed performance.
Apart from changes in safety equipment no major changes have been noted with regards to the train's powertrain and specifications.
