The JR Shikoku 6000 series is a Japanese suburban electric multiple unit operated by the Shikoku Railway Company since April 1996.

History

The 6000 series sets act as an suburban train used on JR Shikoku's Dosan and Yosan Lines. Two sets were manufactured in 1995 by Nippon Sharyo; additional sets were intended to be ordered although JR Shikoku's financial state prevented further sets from being built.

The sets are based at Takamatsu Depot and entered service on 26 April 1996; they are typically operated on Sunport Rapid services in conjunction with a 7100 series control car in a four-car formation although they can operate on their own. The sets were given an extensive refurbishment in 2023, with new brighter interior lighting, LED destination displays and upgraded interior route maps.

Railfans have given the sets fleet numbers of C1 and C2, although officially they are referred to as 6001 and 6002.

Design

The cars are painted in JR Shikoku's corporate color of blue with red highlights. In an attempt to reduce costs many of the train's components are reused from other train types manufactured by Nippon Sharyo,

Specifications

Construction is of stainless steel. End cars are 19.57 meters long and 2.966 meters wide. The 6000 series sets use a Tpshiba S-SC62 GTO traction system which produces a melodic wail.
