The JR Freight Class EF510 is a Japanese dual-current locomotive operated by the Japan Freight Railway Company since March 2004 and the East Japan Railway Company from June 2010 to March 2016.
History[]
The EF510 is a B-B-B dual-current electric locomotive operated by JR Freight; the locomotives were introduced to replace the older EF81 locomotive which had been operating for over 30 years.
The first locomotive, EF510-1, was manufactured in January 2002 and entered service in March 2004. Full-production locomotives began production starting 2003; the -500 and -300 subseries were produced later in 2009 and since 2021 respectively as improved versions of the original EF510.
As with most JR Freight locomotives these are given a nickname, the EF510's being ECO-Power Red Thunder due to their red color schemes when introduced. The EF510-500s were intended for use with JR East, who started using them in July 2010, mainly to pull Hokutosei and Cassiopeia services; the locomotives were transferred to JR Freight in March 2016 due to the abolishment of these services.
Specifications[]
The locomotives use Mitsubishi IGBT variable frequency drives and a nose suspension drive system; all locomotives produced after the EF70 would use a nose suspension drive system. The locomotives use FMT4 squirrel cage induction traction motors.
