The JR East Class ENR-1000 is a diesel-hydraulic snow-clearing locomotive operated by the East Japan Railway Company since 2007.
History[]
The ENR-1000 is a snow-clearing locomotive designed by JR East to replace the aging DD15, DE15 and DD53 locomotives. While the locomotives operate on the JR East network, they are not registered as locomotives.
The locomotives are manufactured by Niigata Transys. 31 are known to be in service with JR East, as well as two locomotives on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway. A derivative locomotive known as the KiYa 291 series was spawned from this locomotive.
The locomotive was known by a number of placeholder names before it was officially designated the ENR-1000, such as "Large Snow-Clearing Motor Car" or "Big Romo".
Specifications[]
The ENR-1000s use a Cummins QST30 prime mover producing 1,000 PS (735 kW). The locomotive uses two sets of hydraulic transmissions, the TDN-20-5501B and TDCN-20-55501B transmissions; both are manufactured by Hitachi Nico Transmission. The ENR-1000 is capable of achieving speeds of over 60 km/h (37 mph) when towing a weight of 120 tons on a 10‰ grade.
