The JNR Class EF11 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1941 to 1974.
History[]
The EF11 was an improved version of the EF10 locomotives with power regenerative braking intended for use up gradients. Four locomotives were built by Kisha Seizō from 1935 to 1937.
When introduced, EF11 1 and EF11 2 were located at Kōzu and EF11 3 and EF11 4 at Minakami; they were used to haul freight trains on the Chūō Main Line and the Jōetsu Line. In 1941, all locomotives were based at Kōfu, only to be relocated to Minakami two years later. The locomotives were transferred to Kōzu Depot in 1947, with new regenerative braking systems installed on all locomotives except EF11 2; they were moved back to Kofu a year later, pulling trains in the Hachiōji region. The locomotives were withdrawn from service in 1974.
No EF11s have been preserved.
Design[]
The EF11s featured large box-shaped bodies with large top-mounted headlights. EF11 4 featured a slightly rounded body.
Specifications[]
The EF11s used a nose suspension drive system. MT28 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
