The JNR Class ED95 was a proposed Japanese DC electric locomotive intended to be operated by the Japanese National Railways.
History[]
The ED95 was developed as a new locomotive which could be used to replace older electric locomotives, such as the EF15, EF60 and EH10 locomotives which were aging. They were intended to have higher performance than the EF65 and ED76 locomotives and pull freight trains up to 1,200 tons.
The locomotive's design was completed in 1982, with a prototype scheduled to be manufactured; with the 15 November 1982 timetable revision, development was canceled due to a decrease in locomotive-hauled trains, leading to a surplus of locomotives which could be redeployed to replace these older locomotives. It is also thought that JNR's worsening financial situation may have had a hand in the cancelation of these plans.
Were the ED95 mass-produced, it would have been classified as the Class ED63.
Design[]
The ED55s would have featured a cab-forward design with a heavily raked body and a front deck. This was to make boarding the locomotive easier.
Specifications[]
The locomotives would have likely used a nose suspension drive system in combination with the chopper control system.
