The JNR Class ED60 is a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1958 to 1985.
History[]
The ED60 was designed as the JNR's first "new performance electric locomotive". The locomotives were the first new medium-sized DC electric locomotives for use on branch lines.
Between 1958 and 1960, eight locomotives were built by Kawasaki, Kisha Seizō and Mitsubishi; they were numbered ED60 1 through ED60 8. When introduced into service, ED60 1 through ED60 3 were used on the Chūō Main Line and stationed at Kōfu Depot before they were moved to the Ōito Line, ED60 4 and ED60 5 were used on the Senzan Line while the remaining locomotives were used on the Hanwa Line. ED60 4 and ED60 5 were used to conduct comparison tests with the AC-powered locomotives used on the same line, but were determined to be too powerful; they were then moved to the Ōito Line where locomotives of its type were in high demand. On these lines, they were used to pull freight trains as well as passenger trains.
The ED60s were used to replace the older ED21 locomotives starting in 1972 due to their age; they also replaced the ED38s on the Hanwa Line when it was acquired by the JNR. The ED60s were withdrawn from service in 1985 and struck from the register from December 1985 to January 1986, a year before the JNR's privatization and division.
ED60 1, stored at the Nagano General Rolling Stock Center, is the only preserved ED60.
Design[]
The ED60s featured large box-shaped bodies with large headlights mounted on the roof.
Specifications[]
The ED60 used a Quill drive system. MT49 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
