The JNR Class ED30 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways and later the Izukyu Corporation and Tokyu Corporation from 1944 to January 2009.

History[]

The ED30 was designed initially for use on the Toyokawa Railway on the Iida Line as a freight locomotive, where it would be classified as the Class DeKi 54 and numbered as such. The locomotive was built by Nippon Sharyo, with the electrical equipment manufactured by Tōyō Denki Seizō.

On 1 August 1943, the Toyokawa Railway was acquired by the JNR; by this time the locomotive was not complete. The locomotive would finally be completed by 1944, with ownership assumed by the JNR. Despite the locomotive now being owned by the JNR, the JNR opted to operate the locomotive using its former number, DeKi 54. The locomotive was reclassified as the Class ED30 in 1952, with the locomotive renumbered ED30 1; it was transferred to the Onoda Line in 1961. The locomotive operated on the JNR until 1963 when it was resold to the Izukyu Corporation.

On the Izukyu Corporation, the locomotive was used to pull freight trains; initially using the same number during its JNR days, ED30 1 was reclassified as the Class ED25 and renumbered ED25 11 in 1961. The locomotive was mainly used to pull freight trains due to operational difficulties on the line, but when freight service was abolished on the Izukyu network the locomotive would be used for pulling the Odoriko service and for maintenance-of-way purposes. The locomotive's final run was held on 26 September 1994 with a ceremony, with the locomotive struck from the register on 6 October 1994.

Following this, ED30 1 was transferred to the Tokyu Corporation, Izukyu's parent company; under Tokyu ownership the locomotive would be painted in a bright green paint scheme and used as a switcher locomotive within Nagatsuta Depot until January 2009 when it was replaced by newer diesel switcher locomotives. ED30 1 would be subsequently scrapped the same year. The later ED30 locomotive introduced in 1962 is not related to this locomotive.

Design[]

The ED30 featured a steeplecab-like deign with large headlights mounted on the hoods of the locomotive.

Specifications[]

The ED30 used a nose suspension drive system. TDK-592 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
