The JNR Class ED24 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1928 to 1960.
History[]
The ED24 was an early type of electric locomotive used on the Japanese National Railways. Two locomotives were produced by Siemens-Schuckert in Austria in 1927 utilizing electrical equipment sourced from Borsig. Both locomotives were imported into Japan in 1928. Initially known as the Class ED57, the ED57s entered service in 1928 hauling passenger trains on the Tōkaidō Main Line.
After the electrification of the Chūō Main Line, the ED57s were modified into freight locomotivse and reclassified as the Class ED24 in 1944 at Ōmiya Works. They were then placed into service in the Hachiōji region, being stationed at the Hachiōji Depot. The locomotives were taken out of service in 1960.
No Class ED24 locomotives have been preserved.
