The JNR Class ED13 was a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1924 to 1949.
History[]
The ED13 is an early electric locomotive used on Japan's freight network. The locomotives were imported with the mass electrification of the Tōkaidō Main Line.
A total of two locomotives were built in 1924; the locomotives's electrical equipment was built by English Electric and the mechanical equipment by Peckett and Sons. They were originally classified as the Class 1030 and numbered 1030 and 1031, but were reclassified to Class ED13 when a rule regarding the standardization of locomotive names was enacted. The locomotives were used on the Chūō Main Line and the Senzan Line to pull freight trains. Both locomotives were rebuilt into ED17 locomotives ED17 27 and ED17 28 in 1949.
No ED17 locomotives that were converted from ED13 locomotives have been preserved.
Design[]
The ED13s featured large box-shaped bodies with large top-mounted headlights. In comparison to other similar locomotives imported around the same time the ED13s had more rounded roofs.
Specifications[]
The ED13s used a nose suspension drive system. MT6A traction motors were used on the locomotives.
