The JNR Class ED11 is a Japanese DC electric locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1923 to 1976.
History[]
The ED11 was an early electric locomotive used on Japan's rail network. The locomotives were intended for use on the Tōkaidō Main Line in anticipation of its electrification.
Two locomotives were built in 1923; General Electric manufactured both the electrical and mechanical components of the locomotives. They were originally classified as the Class 1010 and numbered 1010 and 1011, but were reclassified to Class ED11 when a rule regarding the standardization of locomotive names was enacted in 1928. The locomotives were mainly used on the Tōkaidō Main Line, Yokosuka Line and Itō Line. The locomotives were modified in 1951.
ED11 1 was resold to the Seibu Railway and reclassified as the Class E61, numbered E61; it was withdrawn in 1987 with the introduction of the Class E31 locomotives, along with E52. ED11 2 was relegated to switching duties at Hamamatsu Works in its final years, being withdrawn in 1976, being replaced with ED18 2.
Both locomotives have been preserved. ED11 1, in its guise as E61, is located at Seibu's Yokose Depot, while ED11 2 is located at the SCMaglev and Railway Park; it was previously located at the Sakuma Rail Park before it closed in 2009.
Design[]
The ED11s featured large box-shaped bodies with large top-mounted headlights.
Specifications[]
The ED11s used a nose suspension drive system. MT8 traction motors were used on the locomotives.
