JNR Class E10 No. E10 2

Japanese National Railways No. E10 2 is a Class E10 2-10-4T Texas-type side tank steam locomotive built for the Japanese National Railways by Kisha Seizō in March 1948. It is the sole preserved Class E10 locomotive.

History[]

E10 2 was built by Kisha Seizō; the locomotive was completed on 11 March 1948 at their Osaka plant, with a serial number of 2446. Entering service the same day, E10 2 was assigned to the Niigata region and was used as a replacement for the Class 4110 heavy tank locomotives for use for banking on the Ōu Main Line. It was first stationed in Niwazaka and later relocated to Fukushima on 22 March 1949 due to the introduction of Class EF15 electric locomotives for use on the line. E10 2 was later moved to Hitoyoshi on 12 May 1949 and then Kanazawa on 1 February 1950; its use in the region was rather limited due to the locomotive's size and weight and so it was mostly used as a helper locomotive on the Hokuriku Main Line.

E10 2's driver cab controls were modified in 1954. E10 2's last move was to Maibara, occurring on 20 June 1957. E10 2 was taken out of service on 1 April 1962; it was then moved to Ōmiya Works on 6 July 1962 where work was carried out for preservation. E10 2 was struck from JNR's register on 26 October 1962. Following this, E10 2 was moved to the Ōme Railway Park in Ōme, Tokyo; it arrived at the park on 8 January 1963 and remains there to this day. During its early preservation days, parts from E10 2 were stolen, but thefts have since dwindled and the locomotive remains in good cosmetic condition.
