The JNR Class D62 was a 2-8-4 Berkshire-type steam locomotive built for the JNR from 1950 to 1951.
History[]
The D62s were introduced as a new type of freight steam locomotive from 1950. Twenty locomotives were converted from Class D52 locomotives from 1950 to 1951 in the JNR's shops for that specific purpose, mainly due to the poor condition of the D52s after the war ended. The locomotives were retired in 1966.
No members of the class survived into preservation. However, a wheel from D62 10 was placed in the garden of the late model railroader Kiyō Yamazaki; the wheel was later given to another rail enthusiast in the Kansai region.
