The JNR Class D60 is a 2-8-4 Berkshire-type steam locomotive built for the JNR from 1951 to 1956.
History[]
The D60s were introduced to replace the older JNR Class 9600 steam locomotives from 1951, along with various other locomotives deemed as surplus to requirements due to aging and weaker performance. Seventy-eight locomotives were converted from Class D50 locomotives from 1951 to 1956 in the JNR's shops for that specific purpose. The locomotives were retired in 1974.
Four locomotives are preserved, although none are in operational condition; class leader D60 1 is preserved at the Yamaguchi Museum in Yamaguchi, D60 27 is preserved behind the Yameshi Tachibana Gymnastics building in Fukuoka, Kyushu in poor condition, D60 46 is preserved in a park in Iizuka, Fukuoka and D60 61 is preserved in a park in Ashiya, Fukuoka.
