The JNR Class C60 is a 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive built for the JNR from 1953 to 1961.
History[]
The C60s were used mainly as passenger locomotives and were essentially the successor locomotives to the Class C59 as they were used in similar capacities. Forty-seven locomotives were converted from Class C59 locomotives from 1953 to 1961 at JNR's Hamamatsu and Kōriyama Works; more were actually slated to be converted, but due to the introduction of the Power Modernization Plan in 1958 and the mixed reputation of the Class C59 locomotives, no more were converted.
The locomotives were converted from both prewar and postwar-specification C59s. The locomotives were retired in 1971.
Only one C60 locomotive has survived; specifically, C60 1. It is located in Nishi Park in Sendai City, Japan. The locomotive was originally displayed out in the open, but a shelter was later built over the locomotive to protect it from some elements. The locomotive is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition and is being maintained by a preservation society, with the locomotive having recently undergone a lengthy cosmetic restoration.
