Japanese National Railways No. C11 325 is a Class C11 2-6-4T Adriatic-type side tank steam locomotive built for the Japanese National Railways by Nippon Sharyo in March 1946.

History[]

C11 325 was built by Nippon Sharyo; the locomotive was completed on 28 March 1946 at their Atsuta Plant, with a serial number of 1407. Entering service on the same day, C11 325 was assigned to Chigasaki Depot in the Tokyo region, where it remained for most of its service life. C11 325 was moved to Hamakawasaki Depot in July 1966, with its last move being to Yonezawa Depot on 23 March 1967. C11 325 was taken out of service and withdrawn around May 1972.

Following withdrawal, C11 325 was moved to Niitsu Station as cargo; it was then transported to Suibara Junior High School, where it would be put on display under a shelter. In March 1996, the Mōka Railway decided to purchase C11 325 for use as a backup locomotive to C12 66, which joined their roster in 1994; the locomotive was then shipped to the Mōka Railway and displayed in front of Mōka Station in May 1996. The locomotive was rebuilt starting March 1997 at JR East's Ōmiya Works; restoration was completed in September 1998, with C11 325 restored to the register. C11 325 commenced operation on the Mōka Railway on 1 November 1998 in conjunction with the Furusato Rail Festa; on the Mōka Railway, it was nicknamed Mizuhara. The locomotive would also be used on various JR Group lines.

Due to rising costs, the Mōka Railway announced that they would discontinue operation of C11 325 in August 2018 and were likely to sell it off. C11 325 was sold at auction to the Tobu Railway in March 2019, on the condition that the locomotive was to be operated within Tochigi; the Tobu Railway was the only bidder for the locomotive. C11 325's last run on the Mōka Railway was on 1 December 2019, whereupon it was sent off with whistle blasts from C12 66, D51 146 and 49671; a final inspection was conducted the same month at Ōmiya Works. C12 325 was officially transferred to the Tobu Railway on 30 June 2020, where it was unveiled to the media the next day along with Tobu's other acquisitions, diesel locomotive DE10 1099 and passenger car SuHaFu 14 501; C11 325 was in an incomplete state at the time as some of its connecting rods were removed. The completed locomotive was unveiled at the Tobu Premium Fan Tour on 6 December 2020, alongside C11 207; commercial operation on the Tobu Railway began on 26 December 2020.

Today, C11 325 pulls the SL Taiju service on the Tobu Railway, alongside stablemates C11 207 and C11 123.
