Locomotive Wiki

Tobu Railway No. C11 123 is a Class C11 2-6-4T Adriatic-type side tank steam locomotive built by Nippon Sharyo in March 1946. It is the only preserved Class C11 locomotive that was built for a private railway or company as opposed to the Japanese National Railways.

History[]

C11 123 was built by Nippon Sharyo; the locomotive was completed on 6 April 1947 at their Nagoya Plant, with a serial number of 1473. The locomotive was built for the Kōjaku Railway in Shiga and originally numbered C11 1 (unrelated to JNR's C11 1) and entered service on the same day. C11 1 was transferred to the Yūbetsu Railway in Hokkaido on 15 November 1957, where it was used to pull coal trains; C11 1 later came under ownership of the Kushiro Developmental Wharf when that company acquired the Yūbetsu Railway on 15 April 1970; it remained in service until 23 September 1975.

Following withdrawal, C11 1 was purchased by Tatsunori Yamada and stored in a warehouse in Ebetsu alongside numerous other colliery-affiliated locomotives; Yamada sold the entire collection to the Railway Preservation Society of Japan in 2011. C11 1 would be purchased by the Tobu Railway in 2018, making it the first locomotive from the collection to be sold; it was removed from the warehouse on 8 November 2018, arriving at Minami-Kurihashi Depot on 14 November 2018, with restoration work commencing in January 2019. Midway through restoration, C11 1 was announced to be renumbered C11 123 to commemorate Tobu's 123rd anniversary and it being the third steam locomotive owned by the company; despite the number C11 123 is unrelated to JNR's C11 123.

Restoration was completed in 2021, with a firing up ceremony occurring on 24 December 2021; it began operation on the SL Taiki service on 18 July 2022 and remains on this service to this day, operating alongside stablemates C11 207 and C11 325. C11 123's appearance post-restoration largely follows how it appeared as the locomotive was delivered, although some parts were newly manufactured or replaced such as white LED headlights for power saving. C11 123 is also only equipped with Tobu's automatic train stop systems and can only run on Tobu lines.
