The JNR Class B10 is a 4-4-2T Atlantic-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese National Railways from 1929 to 1950.
History[]
The Class B10 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was converted from ten JGR Class 5500 steam locomotives, manufactured by Beyer, Peacock & Company between 1893 and 1898. 5506, 5518, 5512, 5507, 5527, 5557, 5565, 5510, 5515 and 5534 were converted at JGR's workshops to become B10 1 through B10 10. These were the last tender-to-tank locomotive conversions undertaken by the JGR.
The B10s were often use in freight service and were also used on the Kominato Railway. All locomotives were retired on the JGR by 1950 and were then scrapped shortly after. Only one Class B10 locomotive survives today, B10 4, where it is preserved next to Kominato Railway's No. 1 and 2 steam locomotives at the Kominato Railway headquarters.
