The JGR Class Ke 90 (originally the Tono Railway Class A) is a 0-4-0WT Switcher-type narrow gauge well tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from December 1918 to September 1928.
History[]
The Class Ke 90 was a narrow gauge locomotive originally ordered by the Tono Railway as their Class A locomotives. Two locomotives were produced by Dai-Nippon Kidō Tekkōbu in 1918, numbered 1 and 2; these were introduced into service with the opening of the railway on 28 December 1918.
When the Tono Railway was nationalized on 25 September 1926, both locomotives came under the ownership of the Japanese Government Railways, where they were reclassified the Class Ke 90 and renumbered Ke 90 and Ke 91. Some sections of the line would also come under ownership of the Tōmi Railway. Both locomotives would continue to be used on the railway until 1928 when gauge conversion on the railway was complete. The locomotives were then kept at Hamamatsu Works, with portions of Ke 90 sectioned for use as a teaching aid for future engineers.
Both locomotives have been preserved.
