The JGR Class 960 was a 4-4-2T Atlantic-type side tank steam locomotive built for the Japanese Government Railways (JGR) network between 1921-1923.
History[]
The Class 960 were used mainly as freight locomotives and were some of the first locomotives that were constructed by being converted from another locomotive. Between 1921-1923, twenty-two Class 5300 4-4-0 tender locomotives were converted to tank engine form at the JNR's own Hamamatsu Works and were used from there. Little else survives about the locomotives' lengthy service life; eventually being retired in the 1960s.
No locomotives survived into preservation. However, the number plate from #977 survived and is preserved at the Railway Museum in Saitama, Japan.
