The JGR Class 9400 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Rt4/5) was a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1906 to 1927.

History

The 9300s, originally known as the Class Rt4/5s, were used mainly as freight locomotives and were meant to be as powerful as the older Class Bt4/6s. Twelve locomotives were produced by the American Locomotive Company and imported into Japan in 1906.

The locomotives were used in areas like Mito, Tabata and Akita. The locomotives were later renamed to Class 9400 in 1909 with the establishment of a formal rule regarding locomotive naming. The locomotives were retired in 1927, with none being sold to private railways.

No locomotives survived into preservation; the introduction of the superheated steam locomotive considerably reduced the service lives of the Class 9400s.
