The JGR Class 9300 (originally the Nippon Railway Class Bt4/5) was a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type steam locomotive built for the JGR in 1906.

History

The 9300s, originally known as the Class Bt4/5s, were used mainly as freight locomotives and were meant to be as powerful as the older Class Bt4/6s. Twelve locomotives were produced by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and imported into Japan in 1906.

The locomotives were meant to be used on steep gradients such as the Itaya Pass. The locomotives were later renamed to Class 9300 in 1909 with the establishment of a formal rule regarding locomotive naming. The locomotives were retired in 1929, with none being sold to private railways.

No locomotives survived into preservation; the introduction of the superheated steam locomotive considerably reduced the service lives of the Class 9300s.
