The JGR Class 9050 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class 100) was a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type steam locomotive built for the JGR from 1893 to 1898.

History

The 9050s, originally known as the Class 100s, were used mainly as freight locomotives and were built to haul coal. Twenty-six locomotives were produced by the American Locomotive Company and imported into Japan from 1907.

The locomotives were originally destined for the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company, but by the time they arrived in Japan, the company had already been nationalized to become part of the Japanese Government Railways, and as such, were JGR locomotives from the start. The locomotives were later renamed to Class 9040 in 1909 with the establishment of a formal rule regarding locomotive naming. All locomotives were later shipped to China from 1937 to 12 May 1938 for a supposed rebuilding, but none were ever returned.

No locomotives survived into preservation.

The locomotives were nicknamed Shinkon (literally "New Con", Con = Consolidation) with reference to it being the newest Consolidation-type locomotive being built at the time.
