The JGR Class 9040 (originally the Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Company Class G, then Class 9000) was a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1893 to 1964.

History

The 9040s, originally known as the Class G, was used mainly as a freight locomotive and was built to haul coal. Twelve locomotives were produced by Baldwin Locomotive Works and imported into Japan from 1893 to 1898 and again in 1903 and 1907, and were later renamed to Class 9040 in 1909 with the establishment of a formal rule regarding locomotive naming; the locomotives were later used by a variety of small private freight railroads in Japan. The locomotives were retired in 1964 on these private railroads. One locomotive was destined for the Nicaragua Railway, but was sent back to Baldwin; the locomotive was later refitted and used on the Bibai Mining Railway.

No locomotives survived into preservation.

The locomotives were nicknamed Kokon (literally "Small Con", Con = Consolidation) with reference to its size being far smaller than the later Class 9200s.
