The JGR Class 900 (originally the Nippon Railway Class S2/4) was a 2-4-2T Columbian-type side tank steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1898 to 1955.

History

The Class 900 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Nippon Railway as the Class S2/4, of which twenty-six locomotives were built by the Schenectady Locomotive Works. These were assigned to the Nippon Railway and given the numbers 550 to 575. The locomotives with their short wheelbase and tight turning radius were intended for use on high-speed, short-distance services.

After the Railway Nationalization Act was passed in 1909, the locomotives were renumbered the Class 900. The last Class 900s were retired in 1955 after a long service life. No Class 900s have been preserved.
