The JGR Class 7950 (originally the JGR Class AL) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1897 to 1933.
History[]
The Class 7950 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with a total of eighteen locomotives manufactured by the Rogers Locomotive Works in 1897. These were classified as the Class AL locomotives and numbered 187 through 204. These were later reclassified as the Class E6 with their numbers unchanged.
The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7950 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7950 through 7967. The locomotives were mainly used on the Tōkaidō Line. Retirements began in 1928, with some locomotives relegated to shunting roles. The locomotives were all retired by 1933, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 7950s have been preserved.
