The JGR Class 7900 (originally the JGR Class AK) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1896 to 1923.
History[]
The Class 7900 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the JGR, with a total of four locomotives manufactured by the JGR's own Kobe Works in 1896. These were classified as the Class AK locomotives and numbered 180 through 183, but were later renumbered to 181 through 184 when 180 was unexpectedly used by a Class B3 locomotive. These were later renumbered to Class E5 with their numbers unchanged.
The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7900 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7900 through 7903. The locomotives were mainly used on the San'yō Main Line. The locomotives were all retired by 1923, with none sold to private railroads. No Class 7900s have been preserved.
