The JGR Class 7800 (originally the Hokkaido Railway Class C2) was a 2-6-0 Mogul-type steam locomotive operated by the Japanese Government Railways from 1904 to 1932.

History

The Class 7800 was an early steam locomotive operated in Japan. The type was ordered by the Hokkaido Railway, with a total of six locomotives manufactured by the North British Locomotive Company in 1904. These were classified as the Class C2 locomotives and numbered 12 through 17. The locomotive is stated to be an equivalent to the Class C1 locomotives also imported around that time.

The locomotives were reclassified as the Class 7800 in 1909 when a formal rule regarding standardized classification of locomotives was enacted; the locomotives were thus renumbered 7802 through 7807. Curiously, the numbers 7800 and 7801 are omitted; this is because two Class 7850 locomotives were erroneously numbered as such despite being a completely different locomotive class. The error was corrected by 1912 and both were renumbered 7860 and 7861; this is the only known JGR locomotive where the class leader does not end with a 0.

The locomotives were used in Hokkaido throughout their service lives. The locomotives were retired by 1927. No Class 7800s have been preserved.
